Good questions.
Straight answers.
If you're someone who likes to know what you're getting into, you're in the right place.
As the former owner of PNW Doulas and someone who has spent 1/3 of my life answering questions about birth, I can promise you there's very little you could ask that I haven't heard before.
Here are some of the things people want to know about working with me, what I do, and what you can expect.
No vague promises or complicated doula jargon. Just answers.

I provide nonmedical support during pregnancy, labor, and birth. That includes helping you understand your options, talking through decisions, supporting your partner, and helping you navigate the unexpected.
I don't replace your medical team, make decisions for you, or show up with my own ideas about how your birth should go.n text goes here

I've spent 16 years supporting births, and I don't have a preferred way for you to give birth. I'm comfortable in hospitals, I respect modern medicine, and I work collaboratively with your medical team.
I'm also pretty good at recognizing when someone needs more information, a moment to think, or simply another person in the room who isn't overwhelmed.
I don’t need you to be the calm one in this scenario. You feel all the emotions that come with birth and I’ll maintain the strong, steady, calm presence that I bring. (Plus a wee bit of humor.)

Anxiety doesn't automatically disappear because you're having a baby. And being told to relax generally isn't particularly helpful.
I work well with people who like information, predictability, and a sense of control. We'll talk about what makes you anxious, what helps, and how I can support you when things feel uncertain.

Item descriptioI don't bill insurance directly, but your insurance plan may reimburse you for some or all of my services. You'll pay me directly, and I can provide a detailed superbill for you to submit to your insurance company.
Coverage varies by plan, so I recommend contacting your insurer before booking to ask about out-of-network doula reimbursement and any documentation or credentialing requirements. While I can't guarantee reimbursement, I'm happy to provide the documentation needed to support your claim.

We'll talk through your preferences, the reasoning behind them, and what matters most if circumstances change. The goal isn't to abandon your plan. It's to make sure you have the information and support to navigate whatever happens.
-
Absolutely. Partners are often trying to support someone they love while navigating an experience that's unfamiliar to them.
I help partners understand what's happening, offer practical ways to provide support, and make space for them to be involved without expecting them to know everything.
-
Absolutely. I support unmedicated births, epidurals, and other pain management options.
You don't need to justify your decisions to me, and there are no bonus points for doing birth the hard way. I see the strength it requires to choose to get an epidural.
-
I'll help you ask questions, understand the information being presented, and communicate your preferences.
I won't make medical decisions or speak on your behalf without your direction. My goal is to help you participate in your care, not take over the conversation.
You should have the loudest voice in the room.

es. Hospital birth is my area of focus, and I'm comfortable working within hospital environments and alongside physicians, midwives, and nurses.

Yes. Previous birth experiences can affect how you feel about giving birth again.
We'll spend time discussing what happened, what concerns you have, and what would help you feel more informed and supported this time. You decide how much of your history you want to share.
-
I support every type of birth.
-
These are situations where my experience can be especially valuable. I'm comfortable supporting families navigating complex pregnancies, additional monitoring, medical interventions, pregnancy after loss, and unexpected changes.
I work alongside your medical team, not in place of them.
-
You're welcome to share as much or as little as you feel comfortable sharing.
We can discuss communication preferences, consent, examinations, privacy, and ways to help you feel more comfortable in the hospital. My role is to respect your boundaries and help you communicate your needs.
-
I am working with a very limited number of families currently. You’re welcome to hire me at any point during your pregnancy.

There is a great deal of nuance to that answer.
In short, I come when you want me to be there.
The longer answer- I find it to be most effective to have open communication around the current dynamics and the expectation of what will come next. That helps us work together to make decisions that give you the most support.

My intent is to attend every birth.
In the event that I cannot, I have another highly experienced doula who is able to back me up for any time I’m unable to be there.
In the “worst case scenario” that neither of us make it to your birth, your payment would be refunded. For context, I haven’t had that happen in 16+ years.
